Description

Submitted to Platinum Club's RRRR contest for August-September 2012.

A somewhat more somber entry than my usually flamboyant and humoresque ones.

Some of you might know that I do other forms of art beyond digital; as a matter of fact, 3D digital art is new to me. However, I have tinkered with three-dimensional objects before this. I have a huge collection of miniatures as a by-product of using them in roleplaying games (to model tactical situations, as needed), and I sculpt, paint and modify them with decent hobbyist skill. I've been doing it since 1993. This may explain why I've been quick to pick up 3D modeling.

But for a good while I haven't. I lay down a newspaper, take out my colors, brushes, miniatures, pour water into cups and just freeze. I have half-painted miniatures that yearn to be finished, and they've been in that state for years. I pick up the brush, and just go "no". In a word, I'm in a rut. Much like I was with this render, but thanks to a stroke of luck, I got a better idea than my original (which made too much sense in a wrong way), and extra time granted for the contest, I was able to dig this one out of my head.

So. I'm dedicating this picture to all those unfinished miniatures still waiting for a final splash of paint. I'm calling this "Unfinished Business".

Items used:

1. Retro and Junkyard Jetpacks
2. Dystopia City Blocks 001-010
3. Beach Hair
4. Raw Oagre

If you zoom in, you'll see Oagre on a transparent stand; that's commonly used for flying miniatures, and it has been stuck to a piece of styrofoam to keep it upright while it is being painted. There are two ways to do flying miniature stands, one with bases at both ends, and one with a strut and base; this is former. He's wearing Supersuit and Beach hair, and of course the Jetpack. Outside the window is the bleak landscape of Dystopia, behind a curtain of rain (added postwork). The Shrieker has only head plate painted, the rest is plastic, waiting to be finished.

This, by the way, is a matryoshka of groupings -- there's table group, with "whole diorama group", with "diorama base" with "oagre group" and "shrieker group", and the "whole diorama group" was in full size, until it was reduced down to 2% of original size. There's lots of DS-created primitives and reappropriated props. Lights are intentionally muted. Click for maximum bleakness.
